The Relationship between Smoking and Personal Psychological Factors and Socioeconomic Status in 8th Grade Students from the 2010-2012 Online Survey of Adolescent Health Behaviors of Korea

Background: The age of smoking initiation of Korean has been getting younger. In 2010-2012 ¡¯Online Survey of Adolescent Health Behaviors of Korea¡¯, the 8th grade was the most frequent time for initiation of smoking. We performed this study to know their smoking behavior related to psychological and socioeconomic factors.
Methods: We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 37,786 Korean students of the 8th grade. The relationship between 9 psychological, 8 socio-economic factors and current smoking status was analyzed by correlation and multiple logistic analysis.
Results: Odds ratio for smoking of alcohol experienced group was was 4.98. OR of drug experienced one was 2.1. Boy has higher risk for smoking than girls. Odds ratio for smoking were 1.21 and 1.26 in depression and suicidal thought group respectively and that of suicidal attempt experienced group was 1.7. Odds ratio of smoking was 2.4 in part-time job experienced group. The more the allowance was, the higher odds ratio of smoking risk was. Odds ratio of smoking was 1.37 in the group whose mothers was graduated in the middle school and 1.15 in the high school. Smoking risks were high in the students living with neither of parents (OR;1.57 (1.17-1.40)) or single (OR;1.21 (1.38-1.82)) and experienced of second hand smoking at home (OR;1.59 (1.17-1.40)), but low in those whose academic achievement was high at school (OR;0.40 (0.35-0.46)).
Conclusion: The smoking behavior of the 8th grade was influenced by various factors especially related to impulsivity and home stability.
